I am working on my final undergraduate history paper and I am focusing on Dixon County in WWI. I am looking to track down some numbers as to the counties envolvement with the war effort. Maybe a total of who enlisted, were selected, and those in home guard and abroad. I know that some state militia groups have honor roll books and it might be possible to track down a muster roll at the state historical society if i had regimental #s. I have spoken with Sherrif Dean Chase of Ponca,- the veteran's officer, but he seems to think that the information in the county clerk's office would not provide the answers. Also I have contacted Bruce Curry - American legion - rep for Ponca, but - i still haven't found the answer. I have strong ties to the county as I spent many weekends camped out at palmer's landing by Ionia. My Grandfather was Russ Hanson, and I feel that I could assist the county in establishing a writen history. I already have a 17 page paper ( which I received an A on..) about the Cook family of Ionia, as well as some information about Henson Wiseman from Cedar county. - In any event I would like to share that report with the site here. please EMAIL with any ideas... The Dixon County Museum at Allen has a picture of 15 men of the "Waterbury Cornet Band". Some of the other pictures in the book are from around 1907. It was mentioned some names of men were Murphy, Mason, Pierce, Dr. MacArthur, Herrick and Smith. Does anyone have that picture that could identify each person. We have 2 different pictures one with suits and coats and the other on steps of Depot at Waterbury with white shirts. It stated they played at the Sioux City Interstate Fair, any ideas on that? My Father had an aunt named Ida Fitzsimmons, born in Fayette County, Iowa in June 1870 of Irish parents. I know she lived in Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa in March 1910 at the time of her brother's death and funeral. Ida was a schoolteacher. I have been unable to find anything about her until something turned up today in the 1910 U.S. Census. There was a Gertrude I. Fitzsimmons, a schoolteacher, age 38, born Iowa, both parents born Ireland. Something next that may connect with Dixon County is the name Gertrude Fitzsimmons as one of the teachers who served in Logan Valley School #77. Could this be the same Gertrude I.
